What is Traction Alopecia?

The term Traction Alopecia is a condition of hair loss which is causing by pulling the hair continuously. Usually, women have the complaints of having the same problem as they wear tight bun, ponytails, braids. Tightening the hairs causing a strain on the scalps and hair follicles and thus weakening the catching power of the root. Using chemicals and related products on hairs may also lead to Traction Alopecia. It can be cured if you stopped putting your hairs or keep your hairs loose.

The term was first invented in 1990 in Greenland where they found the tight ponytail as the exact reason of Traction Alopecia. Women having the profession of military, Ballerinas, gymnasts, players may suffer from Traction Alopecia as they always carry a tight bun or tight ponytails. If the situation is not covered under the given time, the problem may get worse and lead to permanent hair loss. Men having long hairs and pattern hairstyle may also have the problem of Traction Alopecia. Apart from the hair loss, it may damage the hair follicles and cause redness, itching, infections and pus-producing ulcers.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Traction Alopecia (TA)?

Traction Alopecia is not a serious medical condition although having hair fall or slight baldness may lead to psychological effects.  Below mentioned are the signs and symptoms of Traction Alopecia:-

It is not as serious people assumes to be. 50-100 hair fall are common in a day, exceeding it may be a symbol of stress or tension. Again wearing tight hairs is not the only cause. Central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia (CCCA) also occur when hair loss starts from the crown and moves outwards.

Our hairstyle will decide the amount and area of Traction Alopecia. If hair tightening stays continuous, it may refer as the situation of damage of hair follicles.

What are the Causes of Traction Alopecia?

Traction Alopecia is mostly found in the women having multiple hairstyles, although men having the long hairs adopting pattern hairstyle may the problem of Traction Alopecia. The problems are more common in traditional women who are not allowed to cut their hairs due to traditional approach or religious obeisance like Sikhs. Apart from that African American Women and Female Ballerinas may have the Traction Alopecia due to mechanical damage, not due to genetic factors. Find the Possible causes of Traction Alopecia:-

Traction Alopecia is the common problems and has been increasing due to use of chemical products, hair extension and adopting new hairstyles. Apart from the common women,  Ballet dancers and other sports professionals may have the problem of Traction Alopecia due to tight buns and ponytails. Children and Adults both may get affected but old women are mostly affected due to weak hair follicles. Traction alopecia can also occur to the pets wearing hair clips. It is always advisable to the women not to wear the rolls and click at night while sleeping.

How is Traction Alopecia Diagnosed?

Traction Alopecia can be diagnosed by analyzing the hair styling pattern and physical examination. No lab tests and blood tests are required to diagnose the reasons.

What are the Treatments for Traction Alopecia?

It’s not the genetic and Biological disease, It just needs some preventive measurements and therapy treatment to cure the Traction Alopecia.
